Gorgeous Kitchen Makeover For a Warm-hearted Couple

A couple reached out to me to tell me that they wanted new counter tops. They no longer liked the existing tops because the grout never looked clean. The kitchen was original to the home making it over 30 years old.

We spent valuable time discussing their meal prep and cooking habits and I quickly discovered that they were not enjoying the kitchen at all. The double island layout and the huge pantry closet in the kitchen made what was a huge space feel tight and cramped. This made them not want to cook at home, which led to frequent eating out and restaurant leftovers in the microwave.

Before

Due to the size of the overall space, I immediately saw potential for adding increased functionality with an update to both the layout and using more modern materials. I discussed this with them, and they were extremely receptive.

We started with measurements and a sketch showing what the kitchen might look like with a single, larger island and removing the panty. They were concerned about losing the pantry, so we spent time physically going through the pantry contents. We found much wasted space due to a dated design and it was used to store many things no longer useful to them. The single island idea was instantly loved.

During

Moving the pantry required relocating the electrical sub panel and installing a beam to support the area the wall would no longer be there to support. I handled the entire permitting process and work was soon under way. During the repair process we discovered some dry and wet rot issues. We also discovered squirrel infestation, which was damaging electrical and insulation in the attic space.  This would only result in more destruction over time. They were relieved by my discovery and to finally stop hearing disturbing “scratching sounds” coming from the attic space. I removed the old attic insulation, thoroughly cleaned the space and closed off numerous entry/exit points the squirrels were using.

The main project included new shaker style cabinetry, hardwood flooring in numerous areas throughout the home, quartz and quartzite custom tops, custom tile back splash, a pot filler, plumbing and electrical upgrades, new sink locations, premium appliance suite, water filtration, lighting upgrades, painting, and drywall work, as well as an entertainment center with an 85” flat screen and audiophile grade sound system with in-wall speakers.

We made steady progress daily. We increased the value of the home and the structural problems have been addressed; they are afforded more functionality in the kitchen workspace and entertainment area and are truly happy with the results.

Here is a letter that the couple wrote in response to our work:

On a personal note, this was the first time my wife and I did any type of remodeling and it was way outside of our comfort zone. Mike literally held our hand through the entire process, personally taking us to the best places for the many required purchases, educating us on the products, and advising us on the design. We could not have done this remodel without him and we are ecstatic with our new kitchen and family room.

My wife and I recommend Mike without reservation.

Thank you Mike!
